Stećci are tombstones appeared between the second half of the 12th century and the beginning of the 16th century, depicting burial practices of the deceased. It can be said that they served as status symbols, representing the wealth of the deceased or the family burying them.
The most beautiful stećci belonged to the nobility and other wealthy individuals of that time, while those of less affluent individuals were without decorations.
The most valuable stećci are those with inscriptions and ornaments.
According to field research conducted by Dijana Korać and Ružica Mirković in 2018 in the municipality of Čitluk, 61 sites with 796 stećci were documented.
Inscriptions were found on a total of 8 of them (4 were documented at the “Visočica” necropolis in Veliki Ograđenik, while the other 4 inscriptions are located in Čerin, Paoča, Gradnići, and Služanj).
