Church of St. James

Church of St. James

The construction of the new parish church began in 1935. By the outbreak of World War II, only 2.5 meters of the walls had been completed, and after that, the construction was halted until the 1960s. In 1966, work on the church resumed, and the construction was completed in 1969. The church was consecrated on January 19, 1969. The interior design of the church was completed in 1980.

After the beginning of the apparitions, several changes were made to the church, including the creation of side doors, the addition of stained glass windows, new church bells, and organs.

For the Assumption of Mary in 1987, stained glass windows were installed in the church according to the design of the artist Branimir Dorotić from Samobor. The famous Italian company Domus Dei from Rome carried out the work. On 28 window panes, covering an area of about 64 m², biblical and contemporary motifs were vividly painted. On the right side, the stained glass windows depict events from the Virgin Mary’s life, while on the left side, they portray the most important messages of Our Lady in Medjugorje.

A new Stations of the Cross, created by Italian artist Carmelo Puzzolo, was installed in the church on Good Friday, April 13, 1990.

In June 1988, four additional doors were opened on the side aisles of the church, in addition to the existing three doors on the church’s façade.
