Vineyards

The Municipality of Čitluk boasts the largest vineyard area in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nearly every family owns a vineyard and wine, reflecting a strong tradition linking people with grapevines.

The region’s reputation for quality wine dates back to the charter of Bosnian Ban Tvrtko from 1353, praising the wines of this area. Brotnjo’s wines have been enjoyed by prominent figures, including Pope John Paul II during his pastoral visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2003.

The annual Grape Harvest Days, a cultural, economic, and tourism event held every September, honors the grape harvest tradition.

STONE VINEYARDS

Located in the southern part of Brotnjo, this unique vineyard transformed a rocky desert into an oasis of vines and grapes between 1981 and 1984. The plantation spans 100 hectares, growing the indigenous Žilavka grape variety.

The venture was initially viewed as a fantasy, as limestone made up over 70% of the substrate. Today, the vineyard produces premium dry white wine called Kameno, introduced in 1990, through modern winemaking techniques.
