In Šurmanci, one of the villages of the Međugorje parish along the Neretva River, stands the filial chapel of the Divine Mercy. Every year, on the Feast of Divine Mercy, the first Sunday after Easter, the anniversary of the consecration of the church is celebrated. The church was built and consecrated on April 7, 2002. The construction was initiated by the then parish priest of Međugorje, Father Ivan Landeka, in 1998. The chapel was designed by the Italian architect Michele Bergamasco.
A prayer group from Trento donated a monumental icon of the Divine Mercy to Međugorje, which holds great significance: the miraculous healing through this icon was one of the miracles recognized in the beatification process of Saint Faustina Kowalska. It also led to the establishment of the Feast of Divine Mercy on the first Sunday after Easter.
For several years, this icon was kept in a small chapel at the Šurmanci cemetery before finding its permanent place in this chapel, which is dedicated to Divine Mercy. Since the chapel’s construction, many faithful and pilgrims visit this village, often traveling in organized groups to pray the Divine Mercy chaplet before the icon of the Divine Mercy and to entrust their prayers to Jesus.
